"Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase."

Frequently Asked Questions
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have before they are obligated to pay Zakat. It is equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. If your net assets exceed this threshold for one lunar year, you must pay 2.5% as Zakat.
Zakat is calculated by adding all your Zakatable assets (cash, savings, gold, silver, investments) and subtracting any immediate debts. If the remaining amount exceeds the Nisab threshold, you pay 2.5% of the total as Zakat.
Zakat becomes due once a full lunar year (Hawl) has passed since your wealth first exceeded the Nisab. Many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan for increased rewards, but it can be paid any time during the year once it becomes obligatory.
Scholars differ on this. Using Silver Nisab (595g) results in a lower threshold, meaning more people qualify to pay Zakat. Using Gold Nisab (85g) results in a higher threshold. Many scholars recommend using Silver Nisab to be on the safer side and benefit more recipients.
