01 — Introduction

What is the Day of Ashura?

The Day of Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. Its name comes from the Arabic word ʿashara — meaning ten.

Outside of Ramadan and the ten days of Dhul Hijjah, Ashura is one of the most significant days in the Islamic year — a day of fasting, reflection, and deep gratitude to Allah for His mercy upon the believers.

02 — History

Why this day matters

The Salvation of Prophet Musa (AS)

When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on Ashura. He asked about it and was told: this is the day Allah saved Musa and drowned Pharaoh. Musa fasted in gratitude — and so the Prophet ﷺ declared: "We have more right to Musa than you," and he fasted and instructed Muslims to fast.

Hadith — Sahih Al-Bukhari
"This is a great day on which Allah saved Musa and his people and drowned Pharaoh. Musa fasted on this day out of gratitude, so we also fast on this day."
— Narrated by Ibn Abbas (RA), Sahih Al-Bukhari

The Battle of Karbala — Reflection and Remembrance

On 10 Muharram 61 AH (10 October 680 CE), Imam Hussain ibn Ali (RA), grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, was martyred along with his family and companions at Karbala. This event is a moment of reflection for all Muslims on justice, sacrifice, and standing firm in truth — though the prescribed response remains fasting and charity, not mourning rituals.

The complete fasting guide

Hadith — Sahih Muslim
"Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the sins of the previous year."
— Narrated by Abu Qatadah (RA), Sahih Muslim 1162
Note: Expiation covers minor sins. Major sins require sincere tawbah (repentance) directly to Allah.

Recommended acts

None are obligatory beyond the standard duties — these are strongly encouraged sunan and good deeds.

Fasting
The primary act. Fast the 9th + 10th for the most reward. Expiates minor sins of the previous year.
Charity
"Whoever is generous to his family on Ashura, Allah will be generous to him for the entire year." (Al-Baihaqi)
Quran & Dhikr
Increase recitation of Quran and remembrance of Allah. Reflect on the story of Musa (AS) and divine mercy.
Istighfar
Increase seeking of forgiveness throughout the day. Ashura is a day when Allah's mercy is especially open to those who turn to Him.

Common misconceptions

What is and isn't established about the Day of Ashura.

Fasting on Ashura is obligatory
Fasting on Ashura is Sunnah Mu'akkadah — strongly recommended — but not obligatory (fard). The obligation was abrogated when Ramadan fasting was prescribed. Leaving it carries no sin, though the reward is substantial.
The 10th of Muharram is an unlucky day
Ashura is a day of divine mercy and salvation — the day Allah saved Musa (AS) and his people. There is no concept of unlucky days in Islam. This belief has no basis in authentic texts.
Many other miracles happened on Ashura (Adam's creation, Nuh's ark, etc.)
These claims are not supported by authentic hadith. Hadith scholars classify such narrations as weak (da'if) or fabricated (mawdu'). Only the event of Musa (AS) is authentically established for Ashura by agreed-upon hadith.
Self-harm and public mourning rituals are prescribed for Ashura
These practices are not endorsed by mainstream Islamic scholarship and contradict the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly forbade wailing, striking oneself, and tearing clothing in grief. The prescribed acts are fasting and charity.
